Un recentissimo articolo sul New York Times (11 Giugno 2011) parla del Governo Americano che ha emesso degli avvertimenti sui rischi della formaldeide e dello stirene: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/11/he...gardinerharris
Sullo stirene infatti dice:
Styrene is mostly a concern for workers who build boats, car parts, bathtubs and shower stalls. Studies of workers exposed to high levels of styrene have found increased risks of leukemia and lymphoma and genetic damage to white blood cells. There is also some evidence that styrene increases the risks of cancer of the pancreas and esophagus among styrene workers, the report found. Consumers can be exposed to styrene from the fumes of building materials, photocopiers and tobacco smoke.
Come cita l'articolo, i consumatori possono essere esposti a stirene dai fumi dei materiali edili, delle fotocopiatrici e dal fumo di tabacco, un problema quindi degli ambienti indoor.
Alla luce delle nuove considerazioni dello stirene si dovrebbero rivalutare anche composti di stirene con altre sostanze.
Ad esempio un composto di stirene ed 1-3 butadiene (identificato con il codice CAS 9003-55-8 e utilizzato per esempio proprio in alcuni toner), sappiamo solo che l‘1-3 butadiene è estremamente nocivo:
